On
September 13, 2008, Oakland A's stars Kurt Suzuki
and Mark Ellis were guests at a lively signing
at our Walnut
Creek, CA Gallery.
Kurt
Suzuki,
born in Wailuku, Hawaii is the catcher for the
Athletics. The A's drafted him in the second
round of the 2004 amateur draft. He joined the
major league club on June 9, 2007 and made his
debut three days later as a pinch hitter in
a game against the Houston Astros. Kurt played
at Cal State Fullerton, where he captured the
2004 College World Series championship, thanks
to Suzuki's two-out RBI single in the bottom
of the seventh inning, giving the Titans a 3-2
win over the Texas Longhorns (whose closer,
Huston Street, was also drafted by the A's in
2004). His time at Fullerton earned him the
nickname "Kurt
Klutch." He won the Johnny Bench
Award as the country's top collegiate catcher
in 2004. He was also selected All-American by
two publications, Baseball America and Collegiate
Baseball. A star of the future for the A's,
Kurt will be behind the plate for Oakland for
many seasons to come.
Mark
Ellis,
born in Rapid City, South Dakota, attended the
University of Florida. Acquired by the A's along
with outfielder Johnny Damon and pitcher Cory
Lidle in a three-team trade with the Tampa Bay
Devil Rays and the Kansas City Royals in 2002,
Mark has been an important part of the A's ever
since. On June 4, 2007, Mark became only the
sixth player in Oakland Athletics history to
hit for the cycle and on August 5, 2007, he
tied the A's team record for consecutive error-less
games by a second baseman at 70 games. Recently
voted the most popular A's 2nd baseman of all
time, Mark is a key player on the A's.
