Two
Baseball HOF'ers Together
For One Special Evening at Sports Gallery
On
July 19, 2008, Giant Legends and Baseball HOF'ers
Gaylord Perry and Orlando Cepeda conducted a dual-signing
at Sports Gallery's Palo Alto store.
Gaylord
Perry achieved two of pitching's
most magical milestones with 314 wins and 3,534
strikeouts. Distracting and frustrating hitters
through an array of rituals on the mound, he was
a 20-game winner five times and posted a 3.10 lifetime
ERA. As a Giant, Perry no-hit Bob Gibson and the
Cardinals 1-0 on September 17, 1968. An outstanding
competitor, he won two Cy Young Awards and was elected
to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. During his
career, Perry played for an 8 different teams -Giants,
Indians (where he won 15 straight games in '74!),
Rangers, Padres, Yankees, Braves, Mariners, and
Royals. Despite this he will always be a Giant to
San Francisco fans. His number #36 was retired by
the Giants.
Orlando
Cepeda,
a powerful slugger, was a seven-time National League
All-Star. As a 20-year-old rookie with the Giants
in 1958, the Baby Bull hit .312 with 25 home runs
to earn unanimous National League Rookie of the
Year honors. Nine years later, the Puerto Rican
native compiled a league-leading 111 RBI for the
World Champion Cardinals, while becoming the first
unanimous MVP in the National League since Carl
Hubbell in 1936. During his 17-year career, Orlando
played for: San Francisco Giants (1958-66), St.
Louis Cardinals (1966-68), Atlanta Braves (1969-72),
Oakland A's (1972), Boston Red Sox (1973), Kansas
City Royals (1974). Cepeda was elected to the Baseball
Hall of Fame in 1999 representing San Francisco
Giants and his #30 was retired by the Giants.
Signing
for over two hours, Gaylord and Orlando were awesome,
chatting with fans, posing for pictures and signing
every type of Giants collectible imaginable. It
was a very memorable evening for all of us at Sports
Gallery, hosting two of the five San Francisco Giants
Hall of Famers in-person in our store.
