Barbaro
new!
Victory at the Derby 16x20 |
| $229 |
In
2006, Barbaro won the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown,
the Kentucky Derby. Undefeated going into the Derby, Barbaro charged
ahead during the last turn and straightaway of the race to win by
six and a half lengths. Barbaro's lead in the final furlong expanded
even though jockey Edgar Prado did not use the whip to ask for his
top speed. His margin of victory was the largest at the Derby since
1946, when Triple Crown winner Assault took the "Run
for the Roses" by eight lengths. Barbaro's win made
him only the sixth undefeated horse to win the Kentucky Derby. The
dominance of his Derby performance led to much speculation that
Barbaro might be a "superhorse,"
the likes of which had not been seen since Affirmed and perhaps
even Secretariat, arguably the greatest American thoroughbred of
all time. Because
of his dominance in the Derby, Barbaro was heavily favored in the
Preakness that followed on May 20, 2006. But tragedy struck. Near
the start of the race, Barbaro fractured multiple bones in his right
rear leg. The fractures were catastrophic. Barbaro was taken to
the New Bolton Center, a special veterinary clinic at the University
of Pennsylvania, where his leg was surgically repaired and where
he remained under care for months. His primary veterinarian, Dr.
Dean Richardson, called his chances "poor" several times
during his recovery, but Barbaro continued to improve throughout
most of 2006. However, in January of 2007 the New Bolton Center
announced that Barbaro had suffered a "significant setback"
with the discovery of separated tissue in his left hind hoof. The
tissue was removed, but Barbaro's health declined and he was eventually
euthanized on January 29, 2007, a sad day in horse racing history.
This beautiful 16x20 photograph from his unforgettable 2006 Kentucky
Derby victory is Sports Gallery Quality
Framed in thick black wood and classic double-matting.
A great gift for any sports fan.

Seabiscuit
vs. War Admiral new!
Match of the Century 16x20 and 8x10 Display |
| On
November 1, 1938, Seabiscuit met War Admiral in what was dubbed
as the "Match of the Century".
The event itself, run over 1 and 3/16 miles, was one of the most
anticipated sporting events in U.S. history. The Pimlico Race Course,
from the grandstands to the infield, was jammed solid with and estimated
40,000 fans, joined by some 40 million listening on the radio. War
Admiral, who's speed from the gate was the stuff of legends, was
the prohibitive favorite (1-4 with most bookmakers) and a near unanimous
selection of the writers and tipsters.
Seabiscuit, on the other hand, was a pace stalker, skilled at holding
with the pack before destroying the field with late acceleration.
From the scheduled walk up start, few gave him a chance to head
War Admiral into the first turn. But Seabiscuit had been secretly
trained to run against type, using a starting bell and a whip to
give the horse a Pavlovian burst of speed from the start. When the
bell rang, Seabiscuit ran away from the Triple Crown Champion. Despite
being drawn on outside, jockey Woolf led by over a length after
just 20 seconds. Halfway down the back-stretch, War Admiral started
to get back into the lead, gradually pulling level with Seabiscuit,
and then slightly ahead of him. Following the advice he had received,
Woolf allowed Seabiscuit to see his rival, and then asked for more
effort. Two hundred yards from the wire, Seabiscuit pulled away
again as the competition proved too much for War Admiral, and continued
to extend his lead over the closing stretch, finally winning by
four clear lengths. As a result of his races that year and the victory
over War Admiral, Seabiscuit was named "Horse of the Year"
for 1938. One of the more inspiring sports stories of all time (and
a great feature film), remember this great sports moment with these
collectibles showing The Biscuit
pulling away from War Admiral. Both are Sports Gallery Quality
Framed, with the 8x10 photograph display including a
descriptive plaque. Just a great gift for any fan of the underdog.
